Deva Raya II

Deva Raya II
(?-1449?)
A grandson of Deva Raya I (1404-1419?), he came to the throne in 1419. He continued the war against the Bah-manis, during which Ahmad Shah Bahmani (1423-1434) ravaged Vijayanagar. Impressed by the performance of the Bahmani cavalry, Deva Raya II recruited into his army a large number of Muslim horsemen, who were allowed full freedom to practice their religion. In 1443, the Bahmanis again inflicted heavy losses upon him, forcing him to agree to pay tribute. During Deva Raya II's reign (1419-1449), Vijayanagar was visited by the Italian Nicolao Conti, who had arrived in 1420, and 'Abd al-Razzaq (1443). Deva Raya II died about 1449.
